Do you have chronic shoulder pain? Is it getting so bad that it is difficult to move and function properly without extreme pain in your shoulder? Are you even considering the prospect of surgery to try and fix the problem once and for all. If so, this article may help. Chronic shoulder pain is becoming more and more common, and we see many patients in our Myrtle Beach chiro clinic with these issues, but the good news is that there are things that can be done to help it.
What causes shoulder pain in the first place?
Well, there are actually many causes of shoulder pain, but because the shoulder joint is such a complex area of the body, close examination is vital to understand the problem. So if you were to come into our Myrtle Beach chiro office, we would firstly discuss with you the problems you are facing and do a proper examination. We would take X-rays and probably MRI as well to properly understand the problem.
When patients are in a lot of pain, they are often treading a fine line of whether to get surgery or find another solution, even if many solutions have failed in the past. Such solutions could include physical therapy, standard medication, chiropractic, pain relieving injections and many more. But when you’re at the point where the pain is so chronic and you don’t feel you can get any better, then surgery does sound like the only way forward. And while shoulder pain won’t kill you, it certainly does suck the life out of you. You know you need something done.
Surgery isn’t the only solution though.
A treatment we perform is something known as Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA). While we do put you under for the procedure, it isn’t surgery. You are not going to be opened up. What we do is put you to sleep for 30 minutes or so and essentially perform a very aggressive adjustment on you. This adjustment helps to break up the scar tissue and adhesions that have formed from your shoulder. You see, as your shoulder has been getting more and more dysfunctional, elements within it begin to rub together. This generates heat which in turn causes calluses or adhesions. Just like when you rub your hands together they get hotter and hotter and calluses form.
So what the MUA does is help break those calluses down and allows us to decompress your joints which provides proper function and reduces the inflammation. Reduced inflammation means less pain.
We have a very high success rate with the treatment, in excess of 90% and it is the last stop solution to considering surgery. After the treatment, you will have to have more physical therapy or chiropractic treatments to help maintain the proper function of your shoulder, but you will not be in pain anymore and these treatments will help it heal better.
Is this something you think would work for you? It not only helps with chronic shoulder problems, but also with chronic back and neck pain as well. If you want to discuss your problem with me, contact me or schedule an appointment and we can schedule a time to talk and examine you.
